Treating HIV/AIDS

HIV is the acronym for human immunodeficiency virus. Over time this virus harms the immune system, making the patient vulnerable to infections and other diseases. When a person's immune system is severely weakened the person has progressed to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), the late stage of HIV infection. Without treatment, a patient's immune system cannot protect it from germs or cancer cells, for example, and the patient would die from infection and/or cancer.

Current treatment for HIV includes medications that can slow down the destruction of the immune system and allow patients to live the best quality of life for the longest time possible. Treatment can improve the health of persons living with HIV. It is critically important that patient's take their prescribed medications every day as prescribed by their physician. Compliance with the treatment can delay the transition of HIV to AIDS by years or decades. Monitoring for effect and side effects is important as well.
